New Developments and the Shrine of Shagambi
Sorry for the long and unprofessional silence! The seasons of high school and holidays kept me and my players busy. I have perfected my method of making paper battle maps in the mean time: I screenshot the location (usually a shrine, in this campaign) in four separate corners, and then paste the pictures on a Google Document with One quarter the size of one page, print out the pages, and tape them together. Guaranteed 1-inch squares and even lines for ease of battle rules!
I have made some halting headway in the story by bringing Meagan and Ashley into a groupchat on the Discord app to work around physical meetups. Makenna has not made a Discord account, and so Marilla the Merfolk has been conspicuously absent.
After a long night's rest, Zebra-Casamir and Vulture-Agile, accompanied by Orvex the human scribe, desided to wait on attacking Kubazan's shrine again and instead lazily walked up the road to the west, while Agile had spotted a different shrine. Upon approaching the circular building, two fully-adult kamadans hurtled into the party from behind the building. Casamir and Agile succeed on Animal Handling checks to give off please don't eat me vibes, but Orvex, being an Old Man, failed his check and was subsequently killed by the kamadans (what can I say, I'm not a fan of non-combat NPCs unless they're animal companions.)
Cas and Agile continued into the shrine without obstacle, except for the giant stone doors which Casamir breezed past with a 22 Strength roll (because Cas has an amazing Strength stat and I had decided to not look up animal stats for this "session"). Inside the shrine was first a 20 foot deep pit covered by bars 2 feet apart, and four statues of Omuan warriors. The statues posed as if they had long spears to wield, but all were empty-handed. A stone relief of a kamadan firsting a spear-wielding grung appeared on the back wall of the shrine, and under the carving reads "Shagambi teaches us to fight evil with honor."
Cas hoof-stomped one bar to widen the gap, and Agile chose to fly down into the pit and land in it. Under Agile's talons, the tiles of the floor shift and groan, but nothing happens. In the pit, Agile sees four archways, two that are walled off and decoration only, and two leading off in opposite directions. Nothing had changed on the first floor, but Cas heard a grinding sound and investigated that, leading him to the hollow-sounding right-hoof-hand wall, between two of the four unarmed statues. Cas attempted to break through the hollow wall, but did not succeed, while Agile searched for the statues missing weapons from the lower floor. As he stepped off of the tiles, he heard the grinding again, and by following the sound Agile found four giant cells, barred with iron gates and guarding four clay statues, colorfully painted and holding bronze spears. Agile, flying up to the gate, poked one foot through to grab at the spear, but in the instant that his talons passed the iron bars, the eyes of the statue lit up and attempted to swipe Agile away.
Faced with no progress against the hollow wall, Casamir headed down the stairs in the back of the main floor. Upon entering the pit with its tiled floor, Casamir's hooves sunk under him and the grinding noise grew louder than before. Agile, at the edge of the hallway of golems, watched the eyes of all four golems light up and the iron gates begin to recede. Agile and Casamir immediately begin a retreat, but one golem steps out from its cell before the tiles Casamir activated could reset.
With movement speeds of 50 feet and 60 feet per turn compared to the golem's average 30 feet, Agile and Casamir make a quick getaway from the golem, but it still attempts a ranged attack by throwing the spear at them both. The golem misses its target incredibly badly, and the spear clatters harmlessly a few feet in front of Agile, who scoops it up while flying. With only talons and about 2 hours left in their animal forms, the spear is a bit unwieldy, but he keeps a good grip on it.
Mid-getaway is all that the group has played up until this point, but eventually(!) the story shall progress!
