Location: Out At Sea
On Monday the twentieth, I met with Ashley from 1 to about 3:30 to continue Casamir's storyline aboard the Merrshaulk's Hope, the transport vessel under command of a group of yuan-ti.
While Casamir was napping in the brig, since there wasn't much else to do in the brig, he was awoken by the timbers creaking loudly and the ship shaking violently. Haley the jailer appeared, scrambling with her keys to unlock the cell and instructing Casamir to get on deck right away while she pushed a weapon into his hands. Casamir rushed up to the deck and looked out to see an adolescent dragon turtle attacking the ship. I say adolescent because I scaled down the original stats to account for Casamir's level. My dragon turtle has a maximum health of 200 health points, an Armor Class of 17, and all of its attacks have a plus 9 to attack rolls. I did stay mostly true to the damage rolls, but I did take the plus 7 off of the rolls.
Casamir unfurled his wings and flew out near its head, and struck out with his weapon. The gunnery crew also got to work providing some backup firepower on the ship's two small cannons. The stats for the Merrshaulk's Hope that I worked with came from this page on naval combat in D&D fifth edition. The ship's Armor Class was 15, and the small cannons had a plus 6 to attack rolls and dealt 3d10 damage.
After Casamir and the gunnery crew had significantly wounded the dragon turtle down to 35 hit points out of its total of 200, the monster retreated back into the ocean depths. Casamir returned to a very impressed deck crew, who were generally sympathetic to his plight as a captive. Haley told him that the yuan-ti officers hadn't left their rooms during the attack, which only heightened the distrust and dislike that the crew felt toward them. The ship's surgeon, Herbert, was called up to give Casamir some medical attention, and the two men were excitedly discussing the dragon turtle in terms of magical marine biology and became friends.
Casamir asked Haley and Herbert if they had any friends they could persuade to join their mutiny and increase their probability of success. Haley, who spent the majority of her time below decks, brought up the gunnery crew and their two leaders Daniel and Gunther. Herbert's position as the doctor put him in the company of the yuan-ti officers uncomfortably often, but he mentioned that he and the lookout were friendly due to the solitary nature of both their jobs.
In gratitude for their help with the dragon turtle, Casamir went below deck to talk to the gunnery crew leaders. Daniel, a dwarf like Haley, was gruff and salty but respected Casamir for the fighting skills he displayed. Gunther, a friendly and relaxed tiefling, felt sympathetic to Casamir's plight, especially when Casamir revealed the fact that the yuan-ti planned to take his soul for some of their experiments. Both gunnery leaders agreed to assist with the mutiny however they could, and Gunther suggested a signal to start the mutiny.
Not thinking much about it, Casamir caw-caw'ed like a bird, and figured that was fine. For a spot of humor, Gunther made sure to ask clarification that the signal was a "caw-caw" like a crow and not the screeching sound of seagulls, because he didn't really "get" birds. Casamir confirmed it, and agreed that birds were pretty weird, then looked back at his own wings with a dawning sense of irony.
As midday was approaching, Herbert informed Casamir that the lookout would be descending down to get lunch, so they should look for them in the galley. A kenku sitting alone raised a feathered arm to wave at Herbert, who copied the motion and lead Casamir and Haley over to him. After Ashley and I spent a few minutes laughing about the "birds are weird" moment colliding with this development, I had Herbert introduce the kenku as Toothless, then head off to get some lunch for the group and leave Casamir and Toothless to talk things out.
Casamir, while fumbling for some words due to his mid-average Charisma score and his own embarrassment, explained the situation about his capture and the mutiny to Toothless. The lookout, in their slow a deliberate speaking voice, agreed with the notion that the soul-stealing thing was super messed up, and that they could definitely take part in the mutiny.
The entire group then brainstormed who else they could ask to join the mutiny. Toothless volunteered the leader of the rigging crew, who they were friendly with. Gunther suggested the Chef, an older tiefling woman who he described as "practically [his] mom." Since Toothless was finished with lunch, they lead the group back up to the deck and pointed out his friend before returning to thekenku's crow's nest.
A tall, muscular and grey-skinned half-elf turned to Casamir, and introduced himself as Vokka. He remarked that Casamir was an impressive fighter when going up against the dragon turtle, and Cas replied that Vokka also looked like he'd be an accomplished fighter. The half-elf commented that his appearance and stature were inherited from his mother's orcish side, which Casamir, being half-celestial, sympathized with.
From Vokka, Casamir learned that the ship had originally been Vokka's and it's name had been Wrath of Ajax before the yuan-ti had taken the ship using their psionic influence. From eavesdropping on the yuan-ti, Vokka also knew that the "experiment" they had planned to use Casamir's soul for was actually the Soulmonger device, which Casamir was seeking to destroy as a part of his original mission to end the death curse in Chult. When asked to join the mutiny, Vokka enthusiastically agreed, and promised to talk the rigging crew into the job as well so as to take control of the sails while Casamir handled the yuan-ti.
Finally, Haley lead Casamir to the kitchen, a small hall behind the galley where a bright orange tiefling woman with grey-streaked hair was scrubbing a metal pan over a soapy bucket. Casamir offered to help her with the dishes and complemented her cooking from lunch, which endeared him to the Chef and encouraged her to speak freely with him. When Casamir brought up the mutiny, she revealed that the yuan-ti were practically immune to most poisons, but she could certainly arrange for some choking hazards to be hidden in their dinner to weaken them.
With the day (and the session) coming to a close, Casamir had all the pieces in place for a mutiny, and Ashley and I decided to leave that battle for the next session.
