Location: Northern Chult Coast and Jungle
It's occurred to me that I should be logging the hours that I spend on this project in some semi-official fashion, so this session spanned from about 1pm to almost 4:30pm on Monday the sixth.
At first, this began as a simple encounter. Casamir, having awoken from his coma just as the party began to set up camp, took watch over most of the night with Waffle and Nugget by his side. This setup was mostly due to the fact that both Makenna and Meagan canceled earlier that day and Ashley was hosting.
As full darkness fell, four spectral forms manifested and attacked them, intent on draining their life forces. Being outnumbered wasn't quite as bad as the fact that the specters had resistance against almost all damage types except for radiant. Being an aasimar, Casamir's attacks were radiant damage, and so he and the dinos chipped away at the specters for many rounds. Eventually the dinosaurs each fell unconscious (to zero hit points) once, before the sounds of battle woke Agile Winter and his dog Dingo, and Meagan ditched painting a house to become the reinforcements.
Thankfully, with Dingo and Agile's help, the specters were soon defeated and the party fell back to sleep for a long rest.
Upon waking up on the next morning, Agile decided that the Alchemy Urn would be creating 8 ounces of healing potion. By the player's request I pointed to the party's location on the player's map, and seeing that they were practically on the coast, Casamir and Agile spent the morning fishing. By the whims of the dice, Cas caught two magical, hit-point-restoring catfish and four mundane minnows, while Agile caught several salmon. He then saw fit to experiment and marinate the salmon in the healing potion from the Urn, which I agreed to.
While travelling later in that day, the party came across a twenty-foot Frost Giant and the two ten-foot tall Winter Wolves accompanying the Giant. Agile seemed to take point in greeting the Giant and each party inquired what the other was doing in this particular neck of the woods, so to speak. The Giant answered first, declaring that he was looking for the Ring of Winter, which was said to be held by the elusive Artus Cimber. Recognizing the name, the half-elf tag-along Xandala piped up to ask that Artus Cimber is her father, they are looking for him, and does Mr. Giant have any leads? However, upon hearing that the party is also looking for Artus Cimber, he draws his weapons and orders his wolves to attack.
Including animals in the battle was the downfall of my sanity. The combined might of Agile, Casamir, and the dinos did in the giant relatively quickly. Ashley and Meagan's focus was then caught up in lowering the HP of the wolves enough to safely attempt Animal Handling skill checks. I kept the order of battle during this ordeal, and so the many laughable moments were during the turns of Dingo, Nugget and Waffle when they, in Ashley and Meagan's attempt to keep the wolves from reaching 0 HP, danced and played tricks, which actually helped in the taming of Agile's wolf, named Vincent upon his official entry to the group. Cas' method of taming his wolf mostly involved mutton-based bribery, and unfurling his wings to stare down the wolf from 15 feet in the air, before landing gently on the wolf's back and dispensing ear scritches.
After this encounter, the party traveled further southward, and as they began to look for a camp for the night, Agile and Casamir spotted a tiny campfire. At the campfire sat a human man and his lizardfolk companion, and Xandala, speaking up once more, asked the man if he was the Artus Cimber that they were looking for. Agile chimed in that Xandala claimed to be Artus's daughter. A befuddled Cimber said that no, this person wasn't a relation of his, at which point Xandala attempted to launch a cone of cold at Cimber, due to the fact that she had only joined the party to find Cimber and take the Ring of Winter from him.
Because the session was running short in time, it was agreed to forgo the actual play-by-play battle against Xandala as she was hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned, so upon unceremoniously dumping her body by the side of the road, the party joined Cimber and Dragonbait around their fire and inquired as to a) what they were doing out in the jungle b) what the Ring of Winter was and why the Frost Giant and Xandala would want it. Cimber demanded that the party tell their story first, and so the party detailed their search for the Soulmonger with intent to destroy it. Artus Cimber and Dragonbait volunteer to join them on their quest, which the party accepts.
The party now totals 7 combatant NPCs and 3 PCs, so my group will hopefully start employing an easy dice-calculator app from Lion's Den to manage so many rolls. Although maybe something might happen to cut down on the number of NPCs. I know my players occasionally read this so yes, the ominous tone is on purpose.
