The way I started my career of Dungeon Master-ing was a lot like how I tried to begin this blog post. I spend a few minutes over-thinking it, and then, words of wisdom came to me in the form of Shia La Beouf: "Just DO IT." I struggle a lot with the concept of doing something perfect or not doing it at all, but once I got past that initial phase of anxiety, it was pretty easy to just buckle down and start preparing. I wanted a way to extend my friendship with all my friends from my D&D group at school, and taking over the storyline was the perfect way to do it.
That, and I needed an official candidate for my Junior Capstone project for school, which is how we got here, to this blog, detailing the entire chronicle from Step One.
My party (the official title for a group of players) consists of, currently, three players, since the others from the regular group haven't shown up for the two sessions we've had before I started this new campaign. There is the celestially-descended weapons-specialist Casamir, played by possibly my best friend Ashley, the Tabaxi (cat-person) martial-artist-slash-wizard Agile Winter, played by recent Hilliard Davidson graduate and former Aussie Meagan, and lastly, Princess Quiana Quinn, heir to the throne of Sahr, played by my oldest friend Makenna.
The campaign itself is not a work of my own, because I needed something to start before my Junior year, although perhaps writing a campaign of my own will be my next step after this campaign. It is a published adventure copyrighted by Wizards of the Coast and titled The Tomb Of Annihilation.
The players began by being brought together by a mutual contact, an old and power retired-wizard-turned-merchant by the name of Syndra Silvane. She spoke to them about rumors that had swept the town, of a curse that ravaged those on the edge of death and those who had been once resurrected by good magic; Syndra herself is one of the latter, being a retired adventurer. She hires the adventurers to find the travel to the source of the death plague, and upon their agreement, teleports them to their starting point: the port city of Nyanzaru.
While in the city, the party shopped for supplies to brave the jungle that covered the island of Chult, and completed a few side-quests. During one side-quest, the party interfered in the sentence of a man wrongly convicted of theft. The sentence was to enter into an arena with two velociraptors and either die, or make it to the other side and earn his freedom. Casamir and Agile immediately leapt into the arena, and with the power of Agile's Sleep spell and Casamir's Animal Handling rolls, the party quickly acquired Nugget the Velociraptor as an NPC companion.
Before entering the jungle, the party was also in need of a guide to keep them aware of the jungle dangers and knew there way around. At first they were approached by a half-elf named Xandala, who is looking for Artus Cimber, a man she says is her father who was last seen entering the jungle in the company of a mute lizardfolk man. Xandala asks if she may accompany the party when they head into the jungle, and they agree to consider her request. After approaching various guides, the party eventually settles on hiring two Tabaxi siblings, River Mist and her brother Flask of Wine. River is cautious and uncomfortable in the city, and Flask is seldom talkative but comfortable among many people. They are also keeping an eye out of Artus Cimber. As guides, Flask, River, and Xandala do not participate in battles.
Our first session ended just as the party finished getting ready to leave the city, and so the second session began with the first jungle encounter. Makenna couldn't make the meeting that day, and so Casamir, Agile Winter, and Nugget the Velociraptor were joined by Dingo the Warhound (modeled after Meagan's real-life dog of the same name). The party of two players and two animal companions evaded giant six-armed gorillas, fought off a giant constrictor snake, and defeated a Red Wizard of Thay, who gave them a verbal description of their ultimate destination. Being that much closer to knowing where the curse originated, the second session ended with the party having made a considerable start into the jungle.
